What is a Learning Management Server (LMS) and a Learning Content Management System (LCMS)?

A Learning Management Server (LMS) helps manage an organization’s learning activities and competencies. The activities managed by the LMS could vary from instructor-led classroom training to educational seminars to Web-based online training. From an end-user point of view, an LMS provides an effective way to keep track of individual skills and competencies, and provides a means of easily locating and registering for relevant learning activities to further improve the learner’s skill levels. An LMS also provides access to online courses for which the user registers. Administratively, an LMS makes it easy to enter, track, manage, and report on learning activities and competencies in an organization.

In essence, an LMS primarily focuses on competencies, learning activities, and the logistics of delivering learning activities. An LMS does not focus on creation, reusability, management, or improvement of content itself.

A Learning Content Management System (LCMS) helps create, reuse, locate, deliver, manage, and improve learning content. Content is typically maintained in a centralized content repository in the form of small, self-describing, uniquely identifiable objects, or learning objects, each of which satisfies one or more well-defined learning objectives. Each learning object may have been created from scratch or by re-purposing existing knowledge documents in other formats.

In essence, KnowledgeBridge tracks the user’s interactions with each learning object and uses this detailed information to deliver highly personalized learning experiences while providing authors with rich reports for analyzing the clarity, relevance, and effectiveness of content, so it can be improved on an ongoing basis. Does the system have an area where trainees can enter and store their notes?
Yes KnowledgeBridge allows trainees to save to their personal notebook, bookmarked for later, review and etc. Plus, trainees can save material and later email themselves this material. The system also supports an automated "copy to notebook" feature.
Does the system provide built-in authorization and privileges based on user roles and responsibilities?
Yes, Administration users can be defined in levels, for example: Super Administrators, Sub Administrators, Editors, Contributors, Reporters, etc. Each level authorization can be defined further by individual or group. Also, Trainee's can be defined within levels on the training side, for example: Employees, Department Manager, Regional Manager, and Corporate Managers, where Department Managers can view reports of their employees and departments only, but Regional Managers can view all managers and employee under them.
Does the system have web-based learning discussion areas?
Yes, KnowledgeBridge supports real time discussion forums and chat that can be controlled with trainee participation.
Does the system have a certification component?
Yes, KnowledgeBridge has a built in certification component supporting the deployment of entire certification programs over defined periods of time as well as certificates of accomplishment. Automated renewal notification and reminders among other robust features are supported.
Can access to external resources be provided within the system?
Yes, a Learning Resource Center is integrated within KnowledgeBridge that provides hyperlinks or dynamic resource content inside or outside the system. Examples include: current news, local, national, and international newspapers, magazines trade journals, etc. This research center can contain thousands of articles and media assets organized into discipline-specific topics, along with a user-friendly browsing system and keyword search. Permissions based access to this area can be easily applied.
